Porcelain Plate

By

E18 – Chinese export porcelain plate. Decorated in grisaille and gilt on the rim with a carefully arranged scroll of tendrils, branches, formal leaves and berries in the style of the du Paquier period of Viennese porcelain and in the center a carefully drawn scene of the crucifixation, after a European style drawing or print. There is one soldier mocking and four others casting lots for the clothes of Jesus. In the background are Mary and St John and a crowd. The scene with its considerable detail, could have been composed from European sources by a Jesuit missionary. This plate is one of the best of this kind.

Date Qing dynasty, Qianlong period (1736-1795) c 1745

Size c. 9 inches / 22.8 cm

Condition: Porcelain plate with an old restoration. The ‘encre de chine’ decoration is in very good and of a rarely seen quality.

Literature A next to identical plate is illustrated by Howard and Ayers, China for the West, 1978, Plate 312, p. 319. A plate with the same central design but surrounded with a different border is illustrated in CJA Jörg, Chine de Commande, Chinese Export Porcelain, Hong Komng 1989, page 164-65, fig 58.
