When thinking about early Chinese pottery the painted pottery of the Yangshao culture (c. 2000 B.C.) as it was discovered by Johan Gunnar Andersson in 1921 has a special position, since this was a groundbreaking find and also the beginning of modern archaeology in China.
In that sense he paved the ground for the truly dramatic find of the ‘Terracotta Army’ ordered by the first Emperor of Qin (221 – 206 B.C.) which was found by accident when drilling for a well. Nothing can either better show us the drama and hard times of the Warring States Period (475-221 B.C.) than the roughly fashioned pots of that time.
The philosophical values of Confucius as well as the early trade contacts with the Roman Empire of Julius Caesar during the Han dynasty (206 B.C. – A.D. 220) is also still reflected in the pottery of their times.
