Jingdezhen Ceramics Museum remains the most renowned cultural tourist attraction in the city. 

Opening in 1954, the Jingdezhen Ceramics Museum became the first institution of its kind in China and today it remains perhaps the most renowned cultural tourist attraction in Jingdezhen, a city known as the Capital of Porcelain.

The museum houses a great variety of historic pottery and porcelain exhibits. Most pieces were fired in governmental kilns during the Ming and Qing dynasties (1368-1911). Also featured are artworks from the Republic of China period (1912-1949) and masterpieces produced by renowned ceramists of modern times. The museum has become a window to a cultured past spanning 1,000 years of Jingdezhen’s ceramic civilization.

The collection includes rare porcelain wares from the Song (960-1276), Yuan (1271-1368), Ming (1368-1644), and Qing (1644-1911) dynasties, many of which are considered national treasures. And the exhibit surpasses all other museums in its holding of ceramic masterpieces created in the past 100 years.

The total collection is comprised of more than 13 categories and 250 subcategories of ceramics, spanning more than 2,000 shapes and more than 10,000 patterns.

Housed here are 378 pieces that have won international, national, or ministerial gold and silver prizes with four having won the National Prize for New Product Development. Exhibits also include many porcelain wares that were presented as state gifts in times past, as well as noted porcelain wares from Germany, Britain, Japan, South Korea and the United States.

For decades the museum has cultivated talented artisans of the ceramic craft. Today there are four: Ning Qinzheng, vice curator of the museum and a master of art and craft in Jiangxi Province; Cao Ganyuan, academic supervisor of the museum and chairman of the Jingdezhen Calligraphers’ Association; Chen Jun, curator assistant of the museum and a senior specialist in art and craft; and Sun Lixin, a senior specialist in arts and crafts born into a family of ceramists and now acting as director of the Jingdezhen Wenbo Art Exchange Center. Many of their pieces have garnered domestic and international awards and are popular among collectors both in China and overseas.

Winning wide praise both home and abroad, in recent years cultural relics and artworks from the Jingdezhen Ceramics Museum have appeared at many exhibitions in France, Japan, Macao and Hong Kong. The year 2004 marked the millennium anniversary of Jingdezhen and in 2003, the Chinese Culture Center set up in Paris by the Ministry of Culture of China held “Burning Brilliance”¡ªThe Exhibition of Ancient Porcelain Masterpieces of Jingdezhen. French President Jacques Chirac personally wrote to the center and visited the exhibition. “As the essence of Chinese culture, porcelain spreads the fame of Chinese culture around the world, especially in Europe,” he said.

The ceramic exhibition and other featured mediums reflecting Chinese heritage at the Chinese Culture Year in France proved a strong draw for the French public. The exhibition, with only 60 pieces displayed, attracted more than 10,000 visitors and all exhibits were heavily attended.

Jingdezhen’s porcelain artworks have generated interest and participation within the international culture of ceramics. For instance, the ceramic industry of France has developed a close relationship with that of Jingdezhen.

From the Ming Dynasty to the middle Qing Dynasty, a large quantity of porcelain wares made in Japan were modeled after those made of Jingdezhen, which had already been widely traded and collected across the globe. Since the Ming Dynasty, countless Jingdezhen porcelains were transported by Portuguese traders to Europe via Macao. Over the past 100 years in Hong Kong, an international metropolis known by some as the Capital of Art Collections, there have emerged a number of collectors who revel in Jingdezhen porcelains.

The French newspaper, Le Figaro, in praise of the Exhibition of Ancient Porcelain Masterpieces of Jingdezhen, described its cultural wares as: “Resplendent white gold, beautiful Chinese porcelain.” These are the particular jewels of the Jingdezhen Ceramics Museum, a palace of art depicting a city’s 1,000-year-old ceramic civilization.

Ceramic Art and Design

Sian is a ceramic artist based near Chichester, West Sussex in an area of outstanding natural beauty at the base of the South Downs, producing hand thrown smoke fired ceramics.

Sian trained at the West Surrey College of Art and Design in the early eighties by Henry Hammond and Sebastian Blackie and visiting tutor Paul Soldner.

After graduating she taught ceramics part time while developing her own work, experimenting with fibres and paper pulp resulting in exhibitions throughout the UK, Hungary, Germany, Spain and North America.

Recent work has been inspired by the Sussex landscape, abstracting nature through drawing and painting, translating these qualities directly through to the work in clay.

The smoke fired ceramic vessels are hand thrown on a wheel, turned, slipped and burnished. Other pieces are hand formed. Raku glazes are applied and a smoke firing is carried out using organic materials. Various oxides are used to bring out colour on the clay surfaces. The smoke firing enhances the form producing a timeless quality. Multiple firing allows further interaction of control and the unpredictability to fuel the creative process. The smoke fired pieces take several weeks to complete due to the nature of the working stages. Each piece is unique.

Ceramic Technology Laboratory

Ceramic Technology Laboratory

 The FLMNH Ceramic Technology Laboratory was established in 1977 under the direction of Dr. Prudence Rice, then UF professor of Anthropology (now at SIU, Carbondale, IL). Pottery analysis plays an integral role in archaeological research at FLMNH as it constitutes the predominant material remaining at most archaeological sites investigated by museum curators. In addition pottery constitutes a very significant proportion of the FLMNH Anthropology collections. The CTL is equipped for basic paste characterization studies: binocular microscope for gross identification of temper or paste constituents; a petrographic microscope for precise mineral identification in thin section; an electric furnace used for refiring experiments and for comparative investigation of clay samples collected from the vicinity of archaeological sites. Analyses of physical and mineralogical properties of the pottery are undertaken to provide precise data to address research questions regarding chronology, provenience or manufacturing origins, processes of production, culture change, and the development of social and economic complexity in prehistoric Florida, the Southeastern US, and the Caribbean Basin. The department is committed to the continuance of this research program as the capacity for in-house specialized analyses of pottery enhances the competitiveness for research grants.

Collections

The CTL houses an extensive pottery type collection of prehistoric and historic period aboriginal pottery from Florida and the Southeastern U.S. The Florida materials represent type specimens assembled by Ripley Bullen, John Goggin, and Gordon Willey, pioneers of Florida archaeology. The type collections serve as a primary comparative resource for museum scientists, graduate students, and visiting researchers. The CTL also curates fragments of pottery samples used in paste characterization studies.

Personnel

The CTL operates under the supervision of Ann S. Cordell, (MA Anthropology, UF 1983; BS Geology, UF 1993), who also conducts all research projects undertaken by the lab.

From 1982 to 1986, the CTL supported a monograph series: Ceramic Notes: Occasional Publications of the Ceramic Technology Laboratory, Florida State Museum (edited by Prudence Rice). Ceramic Notes No. 2 is still available (Nos. 1 and 3 are out of print).

International Ceramic Exhibition Center. Since Jingdezhen succeeded in holding International Ceramic Exposition in 2004, Jingdezhen Ceramic Museum was used for the main venue, but this museum was not the professional exhibition centers, hence Jingdezhen International Ceramic Exhibition Center was built. It is located on Changnan Avenue of Jingdezhen with five stories. The third floor is the professional zone for exhibition. Simultaneously several exhibitions can be held in this building. It is the important center of exhibitions. Generally the large ceramic exhibitions are held here.

China Ceramic Town. China Ceramic Town is located in the west suburb of Jingdezhen. It is a large trade base of ceramic products.

China Ceramic Garden of Changnan. China ceramic garden is located on the northern side of Yingbin Avenue of Jingdezhen city. It belongs to the architectural style of Huizhou in Anhui province. It is the center of porcelain making, product exhibition, themed travel, residence, leisure and the communication and research of Chinese porcelain culture. It is one of top-ten tourist destinations in Jingdezhen.

Friendliness Store of Jingdezhen Ceramics. During Chinese time of planned economy, this store is the must-see destination for foreign travelers, and also the superior store for foreigners to buy the porcelains in Jingdezhen. It has the grand architecture. Many exotic people learnt Chinese ceramics from this store. Currently it is not the store for selling porcelain any more.

Jingdezhen Ceramic Museum. It is Chinese first art museum themed with ceramics. Jingdezhen Ceramic Museum is located in northern road of Lianshe in downtown of Jingdezhen. It is an important zone to exhibit the culture of Jingdezhen ceramics. In display hall, the green porcelain, white porcelain and white-green porcelain of Song Dynasty as well as diversity of styles of porcelains of different generations. It is a famous museum and travelers prefer to visit this museum.

Ceramic Street. Officially it is called Lianshe Nanlu, but traditionally it is called Ceramic Street. A lot of stores on both sides of the street are running the products of porcelain. Foreign people like traveling on this street, and buying some they like very much. Ceramic Street is an important exhibition place of modern ceramic culture of Jingdezhen.
