Ceramic tiles are tiles made from clay that has been fired, similar to pottery. Typically ceramic tiles also include a glaze and are made into nearly any color. The tile is most commonly used in places like kitchens and bathrooms. When homeowners choose to create their own ceramic tile design, they have a choice between different colors, sizes and styles.

Plan Colors

Because ceramic tiles can come in such an array of shades, homeowners have the freedom to choose between many different colors. The options can overwhelm some homeowners, but it is necessary to remember that colors should always follow style. If homeowners want a cheering kitchen, they should focus on pale fruit colors. A Tuscan kitchen lean more toward ambers and golds, while striking modern designs are made using both very dark and very light tile.

Create Murals and Mosaics

Murals and mosaics are some of the most common tile decorations. A mural is actually painted on a set of tiles, while a mosaic is made of many small tiles placed together. These are very useful for decoration, but only use them in areas where there are no other patterns or pictures to distract from the tile work itself.

Use Accent Tiles

Accent tiles are special tiles designed to place along borders or in the center of tile arrangements. Most accent tiles are glass or mirror tiles, which can create useful effects, especially in areas like bathrooms. Homeowners should not overuse accent tiles but limit them to patterns using many more muted tiles.

Intersperse Tile With Other Materials

One modern fashion uses ceramic tiles but installs them in the midst of other materials. A floor might consist of a dozen large ceramic tiles installed into squares cut out in wood planks, using the tiles as accent marks. Tile are installed in other mediums like concrete too, which is one of the most expensive options but can create a striking effect.

Lay Tile in Unexpected Areas

Homeowners can cut many types of tile cut and fit it into unexpected areas, creating an unusual style that works well if homeowners want to add individual touches to their homes. Homeowners can tile cabinets in between doors, the sides of bar areas, the walls or entryways and other areas where tile is not often used but makes an area more resistant to spills and scuffs.

Whatever you decide to do with the ceramic in your kitchen, make sure you use a strong cement board backing, secure the tile with thinset adhesive, grout it as instructed and seal the grout against moisture and stains.

Tile Mural Backsplashes

The backsplash behind your sink is a great place to showcase your artistic taste. Look in artisan shops and online for ceramic tiles that are painted by artists and then glazed, so they can be hung like regular ceramic. You can get individual, self-contained painted tiles that are interspersed among regular tiles of a complementary color for a panel-art look. Or get an entire mural scene done on separate tiles that you hang together in specific order so the picture is formed across the grout lines.

Mosaic Tile Designs

Mosaic tiles, which can be as small as 1/2 inch across, are sold in large mesh-backed sheets, with the tiles already affixed and properly spaced. To get a special shape for a group of tiles, you just cut the mesh between the tiles. Put different groups of differently colors tiles together on your kitchen floor to form shapes, scenes, and even words–or just your own patterns. The ceramic is laid with thinset mortar like any other kind of tile.

Mixing Finishes

Ceramic tiles come in all sorts of different levels of finishes, including high-glaze, flat matte, rough stone and semi-gloss. Try getting your floor tiles all in the same color but in three or four different surface textures. Lay them interspersed with one another in a specific pattern, or just randomly. It initially appears to be a solid-colored floor, but the differences in the finishes give it a subtle depth. To avoid over-doing it, pick just one of the finishes for the backsplash. High glaze is best because of its moisture resistance.

Ceramic tile comes in four main forms: glazed ceramic, porcelain, quarry and terra-cotta. Glazed ceramic tiles are coated in hard, glassy glazes that you can tint with any color. It’s often used in mosaic patterns and easily showcases regional decorative styles. Porcelain ceramic tile is fired at higher temperatures than all other ceramic, making it more durable and resistant to scratches and breakage. Quarry ceramic tile is simply made of unglazed ceramic and has the look of stone. Terra-cotta ceramic tile is also unglazed and thus retains the color of the clay. It’s very porous, so make sure to seal it.

Mosaic

One of the most traditional mosaic floor designs is the checkerboard look, achieved by laying two colors in an alternating pattern across the floor. White tile partnered with another pale color tile is a refreshing twist on the classic black and white pattern. Glazed or porcelain ceramic works best in mosaic design, because the glaze provides any color possibility. Tiles also come in a myriad of geometric shapes, so conceivably, you can lay floor tile in the same pattern as a quilt or oriental rug pattern, for example. A professional tile artist can reproduce or create an original geometric pattern or even set a painting-like picture onto the floor by shaping each individual tile. Mosaic design also includes randomly placed color tiles, as if the colors are scattered as they’re laid, punctuated by a surprise element, like a few individual hand-painted tiles.

Shape

Design by shape works well with all ceramic tile types, but is especially effecting with terra-cotta or quarry tiles. Since these tiles are unsealed, they come in the color of the clay they’re made from. Several shades are available, including red, yellow, gray and orange. These tiles are manufactured in a variety of shapes, and you can lay them into practically any pattern. Squares, rectangles, hexagons, triangles, all of various sizes are used. Putting small tiles of one shape together to create a different large shape is a very effective design strategy. One such idea is to lay four interlocking rectangles into the shape of a square, and place a small square in the middle. On a staircase, interlocking tile triangles on the face of the stair in a dark color with a light-colored grout can really emphasize the design.

Single Tone

Porcelain, the most durable of all ceramic tiles, is used more often in flooring than any other tile. It’s often sold in large pieces, which makes it a good option for single-tone floors. Large white porcelain tiles with white or gray grout is a very clean single-tone look. You can also manufacture porcelain to look like marble for those who want that expensive look at a ceramic price. Smaller, rectangular porcelain tiles of a single striking color—like electric blue—running lengthwise down a hallway is an unexpected way to use color. The shape and direction of the tile also leads the eye through the space.

If you follow the instructions, you’ll enjoy years of life in your painted ceramic tile.

Put on rubber gloves and cover any areas with a drop cloth near where you’ll be painting. Use painter’s tape to mask off the area and protect the surrounding walls.

Repair any cracks or imperfections in the grout or tile. Allow the repair to dry for at least 48 hours before proceeding.

Using a very fine grit sandpaper, sand the surfaces of the ceramic tile to break the gloss and allow the new coat of paint to stick. Take care to avoid pressing too hard. You don’t want to scratch into the tile.

Wipe off all dry dust. Clean up the surrounding area.

Even if it looks clean, clean the tile thoroughlywith a heavy-duty solution of TSP, also known as Trisodium Phosphate. Add ¼ to ½ cup of TSP with a gallon of water and mix well. Apply the solution to the area you’ll be painting with a sponge, starting at the bottom and working up. Let the solution sit on the tile surface for 1 to 2 minutes to remove the built-up soil, soap scum, or hard water deposits. Use a cleaning pad to scrub every area of the tile that’s to be painted.

Rinse the surface several times and remove all residue of the TSP solution. Allow the tile to dry completely, then wipe with denatured alcohol to remove any little bit of dirt or residue that remains.

Use a paint brush to cut the primer coat to the edges of the area, including around baseboards, cabinets, walls, ceilings, and appliances. Follow this procedure with both coats of thin primer and two coats of thin finish paint.

Using the low-nap short roller, carefully apply one thin coat of primer, taking care not to push too hard on the roller. Roll the paint roller in all directions to avoid any edge marks and keep the surface smooth. Let the first primer coat dry thoroughly for several hours.

Cut in around the edges with a paint brush and roll on the second thin primer coat.

Let the second coat of primer dry overnight.

If there are any noticeable paint lines on the surface, lightly sand to smooth the area. Wipe off all dust.

Cut in the first coat of finish paint with a paint brush and apply a thin coat of finish paint with the roller. Let dry completely.

Cut in the second coat of finish paint with a paint brush. Apply a second thin coat of finish paint with the roller. Let dry completely.

If desired, paint the grout lines with a contrast paint and a small artist brush.

To seal the newly painted ceramic tile surface, top coat with a fine quality urethane finish.

Let dry about 2 weeks to achieve the hardest surface and allow the paint to dry and totally cure.

Now that wasn’t so bad, was it? If you follow the instructions, the surface can last for years.

You can transform a kitchen or bathroom if you paint the ceramic tile. If the ceramic tile is old and dingy or just a color that you don’t like, you can get a fresh look with a careful covering of paint.Cautions Before You Paint Ceramic Tile

Do not paint a ceramic tile floor unless the main area of traffic is covered by a decorative rug. Shoes and dirt will cause the paint to scratch and wear off.

Do not paint ceramic tile in a shower or near a bathtub. The constant moisture will cause the paint to peel off.

To preserve the painted tile finish, you will always need to use a cutting board on a countertop.

Never place hot pans on a painted ceramic tile counter. The heat will cause the painted finish to bubble and peel.

The surface of your painted ceramic tile will be only as good as the base you paint over. If the grout is broken or cracked, repair it at least 48 hours ahead of the painting day. If the tile is cracked or gouged, fill the imperfections.

It will take about 2 weeks for the paint to thoroughly dry and cure. You must be patient so that the surface will last.

If you don’t do proper preparations, you will not be happy with the finished product. Take the time to clean, sand, dust, dry, and paint very carefully.

Tips for Painting Ceramic Tile

Since the paint could eventually wear or scratch off, painting ceramic tile should be reserved for vertical surfaces or countertops.

Select a top-quality 100% acrylic semi-gloss primer and paint. You’ll be spending several days on this project so you should use the best materials available.

You can choose any color you want and custom-match the paint to other decorative elements in your home.

When painting ceramic tile, the primer and paint should be slightly thin and you should apply several thin layers rather than one thick layer of paint. Use a brush to cut in the edges and roll the surface with a lint-free low-nap roller.

For a more realistic look, use a small artist brush to paint narrow contrasting grout lines after the final coat has dried thoroughly. This will require a lot of patience but the results will be amazing. You can use a straight edge to follow the grout lines.

Equipment for Painting Ceramic Tile

Top-quality tinted acrylic paint primer

Top-quality acrylic semi-gloss interior paint

Top quality urethane

Heavy-duty rubber gloves

TSP or other heavy-duty cleaner

Scrubber

Sponge

Painter’s tape

Very fine grit (220-grit) sandpaper, electric sander optional

A cloth to clean up paint drips

Lots of clean water

Rags

A paint brush to cut-in around edges

A high-quality, lint-free, low nap paint roller

An artist brush to paint the grout lines

A new trend in wedding rings has taken the form of ceramics and has given men more options when selecting the ring they will wear for the rest of their lives. Ceramic rings carry many benefits over classic materials such as gold, silver or platinum. Aside from ceramic’s more affordable cost, its functionality and strength are some of its main attributes.

Ceramic Material

Titanium carbide, or TiC, is also known as high-tech ceramic. It is used to make many forms of contemporary jewelry including men’s wedding rings. All carbide ceramics are known for their extremely high melting points; TiC melts at 3,100 C or 5,612 F. Other uses of high-tech ceramic include as plating for bullet-proof vests and in cutting tools and coating to prevent wear and tear. The material has also been used to partially form space-shuttle shields.

Safe and Comfortable

If you are one of many people who suffer from allergies to metals, such as the commonly used nickel, ceramic rings may be a safer, more comfortable alternative to metal rings. Ceramic rings are hypoallergenic. While hypoallergenic materials are not guaranteed to prevent allergic reactions, by definition they decrease tendencies to have one. Ceramic rings are also comfortable due to their option for a “comfort fit,” which is a rounded inner surface that hugs the finger.

Durability

 });
// ]]>

High-tech ceramic is even harder than steel.

While metals such as steel and platinum are durable enough to create lasting products, high-tech ceramic is even harder. According to the Mohs Scale of Hardness, which ranges from one to 10 with 10 being the highest, high-tech ceramic rates at a nine while steel is at a seven and platinum a 4.5. Because high-tech ceramic is so strong, it will not only be hard to break but will also resist scratches, nicks and imperfections that other pieces of jewelry may incur over time.

Pricing and Style

According to retailers such as Superior Wedding Rings and eWeddingBands.com, ceramic bands can range in price from about $115 to $375 as of June 2010. Prices increase with added design elements such as laser imprinting, or when other metals such as silver or tungsten carbide are included in the construction. Ceramic rings come in many different styles and colors, although the most popular color for men’s wedding bands is black. Options for cut include beveled and domed edges.

Caring for Your Ceramic Ring

While ceramic rings are known for their durability, this does not mean they are completely invulnerable to chipping. For this reason, Overstock.com suggests storing your ring it its own case when not in use. Cleaning the ring is simple: Carefully wipe the ring with a water-dampened cloth and dry with another lint-free cloth. If your ceramic ring happens to be white, you will want to clean the ring often with water and mild detergent. Always make sure the ring is dry before storing it away.

Got a broken ceramic tile? Don’t worry, replacing a ceramic can be an easy do-it-yourself project. Here is a step by step guide on how to replace a broken or cracked ceramic tile.

Ceramic Floor Tiles

1

Remove the damaged ceramic tile. The most important part here is not to damage any surrounding tiles. Start by drilling several lines of holes into the ceramic tile. Use a power drill with a masonry drill bit. Be careful not to drill deeper than the tile.

After you have your holes drilled, connect them together with a cold chisel (masonry chisel) and hammer. Once the tile is split up, pry it up with a flat pry bar.

2

Using your cold chisel, remove any old mortar or thin set from where the old tile use to be. Be extra careful not to damage the other tiles in the process.

3

Vacuum the empty space out to remove any dust and debris. This will help the mortar adhere to the ground.

4

Using your notched trowel, spread an even layer of thin set mortar or adhesive to the floor. The notches in the trowel will help the adhesive flatten out when the ceramic tile is placed.

5

Center your new tile into the adhesive. Make sure it’s an equal distance away from the others to ensure even grout lines. If your tile is too high or too low, adjust it by removing or adding thin set mortar.

6

Place a block of wood over the tile and pound it even with a hammer.
Let the adhesive dry for at least 24 hours.

7

Fill in the cracks with sanded grout and level it with a grout float. Wipe any excess grout from the ceramic tiles’ surface with a wet rag before it dries.
